Carmo Sousa Machado, partner and Chair of the Board at Portuguese law firm Abreu Advogados, is the first Portuguese woman to chair the renowned multinational association of independent law firms.
Abreu Advogados announced the appointment of its partner and chair, Carmo Sousa Machado, as Chair of the Multinational Association of Independent Law Firms (Multilaw) in a ceremony held last Saturday, October 19th, at the Association’s 2019 annual meeting, in the city of Dallas (Texas), in the United States.
The election took place in October 2018, when Carmo Sousa Machado was elected Chair-Elect, at a meeting of the Association in Bangkok, Thailand.
Carmo Sousa Machado, partner at Abreu Advogados, said "I accepted this challenge with enthusiasm, humility and responsibility! Chairing an Association that is present in around 100 countries and has around 10,000 lawyers, and managing to improve on the great deal that has already been done by previous Chairs, will mean a lot of hard work and creativity, but I will be helped by a fantastic team. I am very grateful for the trust that has been placed in me.”
Adam Cooke, Multilaw Executive Director said: “I am looking forward to working with Carmo to help forge the next chapter of the network’s development. A Partner of Abreu Advogados, one of Europe’s leading independent law firms, she brings a wealth of experience to her new Multilaw role. She will be a great ambassador for Multilaw both in terms of our expansion into new jurisdictions and in terms of our engagement with the wider legal community.”
This is not the first time that Carmo Sousa Machado has made her mark in the law sector. Carmo Sousa Machado is, currently, the head of Abreu Advogados’ Labour Law practice area, and has gained several distinctions and marked many milestones in law firm management sector in Portugal, becoming the first female managing partner, in 2004, and the first woman to become Chair of the Board, in 2017.
Abreu Advogados has been a member of Multilaw since 2002, with an active participation in its activities and in several joint projects. Over the years, Carmo Sousa Machado has performed several roles in the Association, including the election to the Board, from 2008 on, membership of the Management Committee, since 2013, and Chair of both the EMEA Regional Committee, between 2013 and 2018, and Multilaw’s Practice Groups & Industry Conferences Committee, between 2012 and 2015.
